One of the biggest challenges for buses are parked vehicles blocking access to bus only lanes or bus stops. To help improve the effectiveness of infrastructure changes the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) have developed a partnership to use bus-mounted cameras to keep bus stops and bus lanes clear. I will layout how we were able to use technology and teamwork to implement the safety and operational improvements that our residents deserve. Bus riders are disproportionately low income and people of color, so one of the best ways to create a more equitable transportation systems is to increase bus speeds and reliability. Additionally, automated enforcement can reduce the chance of conflict at the point of enforcement.
