Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are here, whether you are prepared or not. Across the United States, companies are testing and deploying AVs for the purpose of carrying people and packages. San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix are the prime examples of this shift, but one day soon AVs will be in your community.
The opportunities and challenges of AV integration are immense. How cities respond to AVs will be a matter of understanding your influence and your policy goals around equity, land use, transportation, the environment, and the economy. In addition, without a federal approach to the regulation of AVs, states like California and Arizona have had to implement their own regulatory process.
Representatives from three cities will describe challenges and outcomes to date associated with collaborating with decision makers at the state and local levels to consider various policy goals, translate those goals into local policy and regulation, and strive to ensure the safe integration of AVs.
This panel session is designed to set the context for the AV case study session San Francisco is proposing for the conference (Autonomous Vehicles: what's a planner to do?), and participants would benefit from attending both sessions.
