Pathways to Climate Resilience: Tools for Planners

Hazard mitigation plans are a crucial vehicle planners use to help local communities, states, and tribes to plan and prepare for climate change. Planners are on the front lines of building climate resilience, but finding relevant and applicable climate change data, resources and information can be daunting.

This session will walk planners through building a robust climate change analysis by combining federal tools with local knowledge and experience. This will help them meet FEMA’s 2022 planning policy requirements and integrate climate into their hazard mitigation plan. FEMA and NOAA planning and climate experts will demonstrate tools including the Climate Mapping for Resilience and Adaptation Portal, the Climate Resilience Toolkit, and the NOAA Sea Level Rise Viewer that can be used to assess climate change. Experts will also highlight the recently released 5th National Climate Assessment, the most comprehensive national-scale resource on climate change impacts. These resources can be used to help analyze a community’s climate risk, when local data isn’t available, and to complement local-scale data.

The presentation will conclude with an overview of additional Federal resources that can be complemented with local knowledge, to consider in risk assessments and mitigation action plans.
