The Midway Area Tour will demonstrate intergovernmental long-range planning and locally based economic development. Planners will be able to discuss completed and in-progress projects, speak with experts directly involved with completed and ongoing projects.
Hamline-Midway has historically been an affordable and accessible neighborhood, located between downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Also home to large areas of legacy industrial uses, this area has provided jobs locally and regionally. As cities across the country balance the needs of housing and declining demand for industrial spaces, the Midway neighborhood has adapted well to changes and has not lost it’s industrial base. New projects put into place by long-range plans are now in progress, including a new Light Rail Transit line, major soccer stadium construction, and affordable housing. Demographic changes have brought new residents and increased diversity to the neighborhood as well, including a strong East African business community that serves residents, as well as Korean and Vietnamese businesses. This tour will provide a snapshot of the important work going on at all levels in the Hamline Midway Neighborhood from the work done with East African businesses by African Economic Development Solutions, to the implementation of a new neighborhood surrounding Allianz Field and the development of affordable housing. The Midway neighborhood is a diverse and exciting neighborhood to witness the intersection of long range and neighborhood planning.
This tour will provide a snapshot of how Planners have navigated politics and balanced the perspectives of neighborhoods and developers in the Hamline Midway Neighborhood.
