Student Planning and Design Competition

Co-sponsored by the American Planning Association (APA) Urban Design and Preservation Division, Divisions Council, and Student Representatives Council, APA presents the Annual Student Planning and Design Competition, which will culminate in a final competition event and winner selection at the 2024 National Planning Conference (NPC24) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Now in its seventh year, the competition invites multidisciplinary teams of students pursuing graduate degrees in planning, public policy, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, and real estate development to create a cutting-edge, planning and design proposal for a site within the ten-acre New Nicollet Redevelopment site in Minneapolis. The City has sought new opportunities for this site following the departure of a K-Mart department store. This competition challenges student teams to propose specific planning and design recommendations for the New Nicollet Redevelopment site, informed by existing City and community goals. At this session, there will be three finalist teams who will present their proposals to the competition’s Final Jury of planning and design experts.
