Saint Paul, MN
Samuel Geer is the President of Urban Ecosystems, a Twin Cities based Landscape Architecture and Planning firm founded in 2012. Urban Ecosystems is a design practice dedicated to integrating the living world with the designed human experience of the landscape. UE works across a wide variety of scales from intimate site designs to regional planning and ecological design. Since 2018, much of Sam's work has focussed on collaboration with the Tribal Nations of the Great Lakes Region to help protect and restore sacred sites, assist with land reclaimation efforts, and working to enhance the visibility of Indigenous People and Culture. This work began by facilitating the restoration process for Nagaajiwanaang Jiibayakamigong, a historic burial ground which was accidentally disturbed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 2017. This work led to a collaboration with the City of Duluth and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to design Waabizheshikana - The Marten Trail, a 10.1 mile trail along Gitchi-Gami Ziibi - the St. Louis River. This interpretive trail celebrates the history, ecology, and people of the estuary through an indigenous perspective, leading to a larger effort to connect these projects into a new kind of cultural corridor.
