Jason Sartori became the Montgomery County Planning Director in November 2023. With nearly 1.1 million people, Montgomery County has the largest population in Maryland and is home to four of the top ten most diverse communities in the US. Located just north of Washington, DC, the county has a mix of urban, suburban, and rural areas, and with a strong life sciences presence, is the economic engine for the state of Maryland. The county recently adopted its first comprehensive update to its General Plan in over 50 years. Thrive Montgomery 2050 establishes a planning framework rooted in promoting racial equity, environmental resilience, and economic competitiveness. Prior to becoming Planning Director, Jason served as Chief of Montgomery Planning's Countywide Planning and Policy Division, which focuses on countywide planning efforts, including housing and zoning policy, transportation planning, transportation networks and modeling, Vision Zero, public infrastructure adequacy monitoring, environmental resources, and historic preservation. Jason joined Montgomery Planning in January 2016 and previously served as the Associate Director of the National Center for Smart Growth at the University of Maryland. While there, he led numerous projects related to affordable housing, transportation modeling, opportunity accessibility metrics, economic development, and growth visioning and scenario evaluation.
