Peter Sotherland is the Active Transportation Coordinator and Section Manager for the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). Peter started his work in active transportation while serving as the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator and an Regional Planning Assistant Division Chief at the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA). While serving in this capacity Peter developed, co-authored, and began implementation of the Context Driven Guide which revamped SHA's evaluation and implemention of bicycle and pedestrian roadway improvements. Peter also managed the Transportation Alternatives program team, and developed policy, processes, and guidance for active transportation initiatives. Since moving to Orange County in 2020 and beginning his role at OCTA, Peter has overseen a range of projects and initiatives including: the Safe Travels Education Program Campagin delivering SRTS activities to 25 schools serving disadvantaged communities, the OCTA Safe Routes to School Action Plan, establising the Orange County Safe Routes to School Program, the environmental phase of the OC Connect trail, the OCTA bicycle counts program, and a wide range of other activities geared towards advancing active transportation as a viable mode of transportation in the region.
