Michael is a strategic leader on place, urban planning and public health. He has initiated and led programmes on spatial planning and health including at the Town and Country Planning Association, and currently at the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities and part time PhD student at the University of Bristol affiliated with the Tackling the Root Causes of Unhealthy Urban Development (TRUUD) research project. He is a Chartered Fellow town planner, honorary faculty of public health member, Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health and Honorary Fellow at Teesside University. His research interests are linking systems approaches to local spatial planning interventions to deliver public health outcomes and his research has provided a census of health across statutory local spatial plans in England which he hopes can be applicable internationally. His work responsibilities include writing guidance to support policy development and implementation on urban planning for health. The work includes helping local systems improve the uptake of healthy planning policies, make use of Health Impact Assessment, and improve action on the food environment. These programmes have helped contribute to a resurgence in interest on planning for and delivering improvements in public health, particularly in local government.
