Inclusive Storytelling: New Tools for Climate Resilience

Storytelling is a powerful, but often undervalued, tool for community resilience and risk reduction. Stories help people develop emotional connections to better understand new concepts and build empathy among diverse groups. Stories can move hearts, minds, and bring people together – but they are not fully impactful unless they are inclusive. The planning community will hear how unique partnerships can connect disparate parts of the whole community through stories, providing new ways to share feedback and perspectives from all parts of the whole community. Participants will explore how unique, cross-sector partners from FEMA, the Sundance Institute, and the City of Hopkins, MN work together to highlight authentic stories and lift voices often left out of climate conversations and future visioning. Participants will learn how to use impactful, mutually beneficial partnerships foster unique storytelling opportunities, which lead to greater trust and increased climate resilience. Attendees will also have an opportunity to hear stories from different mediums including audio and film and share their stories with fellow participants.
