​Let’s Talk Streets: Equity- and Values-Centered Transportation Planning

​​This session will draw upon recent experiences of the presenters to rethink how transportation planning and Complete Streets decisions are made. We will discuss the conventional values and approach for transportation planning and street design, and how the City of Madison, Wisconsin, reframed the process to result in more equitable outcomes through its new Let‘s Talk Streets process. Through presentations and small group discussions, we will discuss the roles of various actors—including city department leaders, planning and design staff, elected officials, community groups, and consultants—and ways to reach agreement among those groups. We will also explore approaches to making process changes, think about how to diagram and relate diverse needs and priorities, and integrate community priorities more fully into decision-making. ​
