YouTube and other video-based social media platforms are increasingly becoming a forum for people to coalesce around planning and urbanism issues. Long form video in particular provides a format to engage people, especially younger generations with emerging political interests, in deeper discussions and explorations of city planning principles. In this talk you’ll hear about key lessons learned from the first two years of the YouTube channel CityNerd. We’ll talk about how to communicate effectively with younger people who aren’t always politically engaged, the surprisingly straightforward technical nuts and bolts of how to make effective YouTube content, and what to know about the powerful YouTube algorithm if you’re making video content for your own agency, consulting firm, or nonprofit.
