Managing: Real Talk

This session highlights the unspoken realities of leadership/management roles. It will assist participants in determining the type of impact they want to have in their professional careers and whether leadership/management roles are well-suited to help them achieve that. Participants will understand how leadership roles can help them advance inclusive and equitable community planning, while also shining a light on the common obstacles and limitations. Participants will learn about the non-planning skills that are required in leadership/management roles in order to achieve the meaningful and impactful changes all planners aspire to make within the communities they serve. Participants will learn from the experiences of their fellow colleagues, so that they can achieve even greater outcomes and can avoid (or better navigate) the pitfalls along the way. In short, this is an opportunity for current leaders to share wit the next generation of leaders many of the things no one ever told us and the things we never though to ask about actually working as a manager. Additionally, the session may help alleviate the sense of isolation frequently reported by managers by demonstrating that the frustrations they experience are shared amongst the entire community of planning leaders.
