Housing affordability and access are always a concern for fast growing cities. Ensuring affordability remains and that displacement is at bay safeguards long-term sustainability of a stable economy and population as well as maintains its character and historical uniqueness. Thus, the vision, policy guidance and development regulations under which housing is built contribute to the creation of a development environment that fosters affordability and mitigates displacement. Missing Middle Housing provides diverse housing types that fit within the scale of development around it.

This presentation focuses on the perspective and approach of three different cities (Charlotte, Minneapolis, and Portland) to filling the missing middle housing issue that prevails countrywide. It provides historical context, visioning process, policies, adopted regulations, challenges, lessons learned and successes.
