Planners on both sides of the Atlantic are pursuing reforms and new solutions to improve housing supply and affordability. This comes as policymakers at all levels of government are focusing on housing and the role of planning and related regulatory systems in providing housing diversity, attainability, and equity. The organizations representing planners in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada have all made housing a priority focus. This session will feature the leaders of APA, the Royal Town Planning Institute, and the Canadian Institute of Planners discussing the housing challenge, how planners and these organizations are responding, and new policy approaches being debated and implemented by elected officials. In each country, there are major new policy trends – from zoning reform to streamlined reviews and accelerator funds to planning assistance – that have major implications for planning and communities. Find out what’s happening and what the opportunities and challenges are for planners in today’s political and policy environment for housing directly from these global planning leaders.
