Jem Thompson is a current student in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program at the University of Minnesota, where he also works as a graduate research assistant with the Accessibility Observatory. Jem's professional background is primarily in active transportation planning and transportation demand management, and as a student he has focused his studies on the intersection of land-use, urban design, and sustainable transportation. At the University of Minnesota, Jem founded the Humphrey School Planning and Design Team to compete in the APA's annual Student Planning and Design Competition, focusing of the Former K-mart site and New Nicollet Redevelopment initiative in Minneapolis, MN. The 'Reconnect' proposal produced for this competition seeks to present an alternative approach to development which is grounded in community empowerment and ownership, human scaled design, and enhanced accessibility, within a framework that allows for adaptation, flexibility and emergent urbanism.
