Planning for Equitable Urban Agriculture

During his keynote at the 2003 national APA conference, Jerome Kaufman urged planners to attend to the food system. A quintessential scholar-practitioner, Kaufman's call two decades ago catalyzed a dramatic shift in how planners address food systems. This session, featuring a new book in honor of Kaufman, highlights a) a historical framework for linking ethics and urban agriculture, b) examples of how equitable urban agriculture is practiced, and c) innovative local government policies for supporting equitable urban agriculture. In doing so, the session addresses a variety of questions relevant to planners around the country: Where do urban agriculture and food systems planning fit in planning and governance today? How does planning for urban agriculture address questions of equity and justice? Within the urban agriculture domain, who is planning, who is being planned for, and at whose expense? Session will include examples of local governments' work from across the country. Following brief presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to engage planning practitioners in interactive, facilitated exercises that simulate planning scenarios. The session will be led by leading scholars (overview presentations), practitioners (practical examples), and facilitators (hands-on exercises).
