Deriving Social Value from Healthy Urban Development

The combination of commitment to health equity and growth of social value and impact is making seismic shifts in expectations on private and public organizations to demonstrate contribution to society from real estate activities. Drawing on recommendations on value and business case of healthy equitable real estate and placemaking (eg ULI, UKGBC) the panel discusses novel case studies of embedding social value during health-led planning policy and decision-making. Examples promote a whole system and development cycle approach including direct and indirect interventions such as regulatory, land allocation, community asset transfer, policy, decision-making and development levies. Good and bad practices to answer and elicit audience responses on how we can measure social impact of healthy development on communities? Outcomes from equitable access to nature, affordable and sustainable housing, healthier food and social infrastructure are some of the many common-good values that can be and are being secured from planning. Delivering mutual benefits from interventions that maximize determinants of population health and equity is a win-win for everyone invested financially, culturally, environmentally in healthy place-making. But while public authorities and developers have planning powers to drive better social value outcomes, these powers are not being embedded when planning healthy urban development projects.
